Tobi stood still as he looked as impassive as possible while gauging if they bought his story. When the younger man, who seemed gullible or compassionate beyond what is necessary, told Sophia that she was tough, he couldn't help respond like the man wouldn't believe while his friend pretended to act bashful and pretended to blush at the words. The bald man had to admit he was impressed, he was only able to act this way because this was his normal reaction in groups. Sophia was taking acting to the next several levels though.
Then after the older man, who was acting suspicious the entire time, confirmed their story that Red fell and got her injury that way asked the dreaded question. It looked like he did realize their ages don't match up, just was taking his goddamn getting to it. Before Tobi could think of an excuse, like that he was actually older than he looks and was a teen when “Rachel" was born, Sophia answered for him. It was probably for the best, being a stepfather was probably more believable than simply being older than he actually looks. Especially since he hasn't aged too badly, he is actually younger than most people perceive him to be.
In any case, the two strangers bought the story and decided to not ask any more questions. Which is good, because he is not sure how the two of them could handle being asked where Sophia's mom went. A question that not even Tobi ever dared to ask no matter how close their relationship will become. Tobi stood still holding onto Red’s hand as they confirmed their the duo had a place nearby. He wasn't all that surprised to hear them confirmed this as he pegged the younger man as not having much common sense when it came to groups anyway.
Tobi raised an eyebrow in amusement as the guys asked if they ran into the black stuff and blood covered bastards. He wondered how far their influence had spread especially if they don't personally come this far. In any case, while he was glad that the man retracted his question, it showed that it is for the best they get out of Oklahoma as possible. He gave a slight nod of agreement as Sophia gave a reasoning for why they were headed to Texas as they finally parted ways with the strangers. He would have liked to stay with a group longer especially in case Red’s former group of assholes return, but he decided it was for the best they part now. Who knows what will happen if they or anyone else with them see the mark on Sophia's face. Plus they appeared to be heading in the opposite direction of where they were heading.
As they finally walked far away that they might as well be dots in the distance, he gave a hearty chuckle as Red went back to her actual personality and expressed gratitude on how gullible the strangers were. He gave a small smile in return to Sophia’s as she explained why she went with calling him her dad. “Oh good, I was actually starting to feel old for almost that whole exchange. I mean come on, I am only a little past my mid-20s,” Tobi playfully complained as he started up the truck. He gave another chuckle as Sophia once again asked him to not mess with her hair.
“Hey it was all part of the ruse. Especially embarrassing you, and it worked didn't it?” Tobi asked as he quickly turned off the truck and stepped out. “Oh shit, I almost forgot the gas!” Tobi shouted as he went to the gas container that was holding the siphoned fuel. To his relief, the container was just nearly full by the time he reached it. After a minute or two, he got the tools used for this job and proceeded to fill up the truck.
“You better not tell anyone about this or else I will say something embarrassing for why your cheek is bandaged. Not sure what, but I’ll think of something. Maybe you slipped as you raced to use a working bathtub or you wanted to show me something you made and feel just you reached me,” Tobi playfully threatened as he filled up the truck. After he was done, he got into the truck again after putting everything away. It wasn't a whole lot of gallons but he wanted to get move as close to the border as possible. Hopefully they can pass by another car
As they drove away, Tobi glanced at his friend once again. “Feeling better?” he asked as he placed the energy bar from earlier next to her. “If you are, you should probably eat now before you regret it.” They then drive on in silence before he spoke up again. “Anything you want to talk about to pass the time? Maybe how hopefully there are more people like that younger fool in Texas? Would make our lives easier. Or maybe we should plan out a better story to tell others? We did good on improv, but things could have went south if the other didn't let up on questioning,” Tobi said as they drove closer and closer to the border.
Hopefully they can reach Texas soon without having to stay here another day longer. Actually probably not, especially if they have to keep stopping to siphon fuel. But they most likely won't have to spend weeks in this state like Arkansas. He missed Arkansas actually, it was the most peaceful he had been and it was when Red went from just a companion to an actual friend. He was grateful to have visited somewhere that gave mostly good memories but it was too late to turn back now. Hopefully Texas will be just as good for them.
