The Walking Dead is a story about Rick Grimes, and the small group of survivors he leads in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. The zombies in this world are referred to as 'Walkers' and just from one bite, are able to infect you and eventually turn you into one. The only way to kill them is by damaging their brain, either by shooting or by stabbing, to ensure them to be lifeless.
Life in the post-apocalyptic world is harsh, and brings to light the worst of human nature when survival is all you have left. No one remains the same in this new world, and the true colors of many are easily shown by the basic instinct of keeping yourself alive.
The Walking Dead Nation is an alternate universe story based off the TV show. It is an open world RPG where members can create their own groups in their own parts of the world, where as Rick's group is based in Virginia. There are many canon characters available, and their stories are loosely based on the show. Many people remain alive on the site that died off in the show such as Beth, Merle, and Tyreese. The story takes place after season 5, but is AU in part that they never discovered Alexandria, and instead took refuge in an abandoned town that they came across in their travels. The town offered them enough to settle for a little while, such as grocery stores that weren't completely scavenged and weapon stores with some guns and ammunition left. This leads to present day in the plot where they stay as a group living in an abandoned property in the town.
What does the group do next? Try to kill off all the Walkers in the town and put up their own walls and claim this place as their own and start a new chapter in their life? Or do they continue to move forward and look elsewhere for a better place to settle? Is there really anymore in this life to be hopeful for, or is this all that remains? That is up for the members to decide the continuous journey of the group.
