The Mariners
"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came."
-John F. Kennedy
History:
The Mariners were formed after the Battle of Bar Harbor, a civil war between the people who sided with Richard 'Big Dick' Fogarty, and the (mostly young) people who fled the town after the first leader, Abraham Faraday was murdered during a bloody coup. Under the leadership of Mallory Faraday and Claudia Rigotti, and with the support of The Hellriders MC, the youth in the forests of Arcadia National Park were able to regain control of the town and bring Richard 'Big Dick' Fogarty and his co-conspirators to justice. In Mallory Faraday's victory speech she referred to all of them as 'mariners', and the name soon became synonymous with the inhabitants of Bar Harbor.
Organisation:
Due to their leaders' military backgrounds, a military hierarchy was installed with at the head a Captain-Commander, assisted by Lieutenants each responsible for one branch within the community. Next to the military hierarchy is a civilian council, with one representative for each working branch. Although the Captain-Commander may be assisted and advised, final decisions and judgments are reserved for her, which are final.
Captain-Commander:
-Mallory Faraday (Base Commander)
Lieutenants:
-Claudia Rigotti (Basic & Advanced Training Officer)
-Jake Eriksson (Base Defense & Security Officer)
-Mikayla Forrester (Procurement & Logistics Officer)
-Marlene Faraday (Chief Medical Officer, temporary)
-... (Recon & Exploration Officer)
-... (Chief Mechanical Officer)
Civilian Council:
-John Mitchell (Fishing)
-Gerald Forrester Sr. (Farming, Provisions)
-Daniel Alvarez (Food Distribution)
-... (Sanitation)
-... (Waste Disposal)
-... (Maintenance Service)
Uniforms:
Due to an overabundance of military surplus clothing, it was opted that the uniform of all Mariner military personnel would consist of a beige top and an olive drab bottom, making the standard Mariner base uniform look like those of the US in the World War II era. However, for special tasks there is a reserve in more modern day camo clothing, such as multicam, woodland and marpat. Mariner military personnel may also require to wear civilian clothing if the situation calls for it.

Weapons:
After the battle and rebuild of the town, an experimental firearm was build by order of Mallory Faraday, the M1 Garand Bar Harbor Special. This weapon was created after the M1 Garand, which was standard-issue for the US Military during World War 2, but adapted to hold 5.56mm rounds instead of the 7.62x63 rounds the original had. The plan behind the M1 Garand Bar Harbor Special was to create a new semi-automatic weapon that was easily manufactured, and was effective against both undead and living opponents, with its second purpose being preservation of ammunition. The idea is to implement this weapon as the standard-weapon for Bar Harbor military personnel, keeping more modern weapons such as the M4A1 for more demanding tasks and fights.
Another standard weapon for all personnel in Bar Harbor is the harpoon, which was mass-produced after the battle as a means to be able to fight off the dead. It is standard-issue for Mariner military personnel and is mostly used by troops tasked with exploration or clearing out the dead. Where as most harpoons are made of wood, there are more special version that are retractable and foldable.
Vehicles:
By order of Captain-Commander Faraday, a special task force which contained a few mechanics, a search was ordered for any abandoned military vehicles. Their goal was to look for these vehicles, get them in working condition and bring them back. Being succesful in their task, they brought back several dozen army trucks, jeeps and humvees, including a few World War 2 era vehicles previously owned by private owners, which were still in excellent condition. In general, the more modern vehicles are used to go beyond the borders of Bar Harbor, whereas the older vehicles are used to get around the town and island.
Goals:
The main goal of the Mariners is to rebuild society from the ashes of the old America, finding and joining communities and creating a network on which the foundations of a New America can be build. An America that is free of the dead, and those that thrive in the world in its current state. The ideal is that within a 100 years, the world will be rebuild, but this time better and having learned from the mistakes it has made.
