Even Though Yesterday's Gone
History: James grew up in the small town of Belfast Maine, A stones throw away from the water every weekend the weather allowed he would spend on the waterfront, Surfing and rock'n roll became his go to's quickly as the years past. His father owned his own carpentry business which James took up helping with as he came to his high school years. His grades staying steady was the condition which he adhered to without question, From an early age he noted that his parents weren't the usual ones, Being foster parents there was always a number of children around and as the years past and James came to understand what his family did he came to dedicate himself to helping them out. In his 10th grade year His parents announced that two of the fosters would soon become more than just fosters passing through, that they would become his new brother and sister. The news filled James with joy. Always being surrounded by foster kids James never really felt alone per say but having someone to call brother or sister just felt different, felt unique.
It was the next year when his interest in the military took roots. James had reached his junior year of high school and was attending a job fair, Walking the isles of the stalls setup in the school gymnasium a man in uniform caught his eye, all dressed up in his uniform next to another in it's camo pattern counterpart. That chance encounter set his life in motion. The next year after graduation, after carefully discussing it with his family and gaining their support he set out to boot. As expected by what the man at the booth told him it wasn't easy. Training from dawn til dusk, Hard and long training sessions became the norm. James took to it as a fly would to water. Years spent helping his father with the carpentry business had led to him being fit and although the exercises were tough and his stamina wasn't the best at the start he quickly grew used to it. Pushing himself even further he found himself growing even further than he thought he would and as graduation day came and went he passed near the top of his section that year.
It was only the beginning, His first deployment saw him overseas. Right in the middle of it all he was placed in a recon unit tasked with scouting out an enemy position. That was were he first encountered death. They were spotted and took fire. One of his fellow soldiers were hit and fell dead at his feet. Only twenty one the scene hit him hard, The dreams recurred for weeks after that, the scene playing on repeat night after night it began to get to him. As time passed and his deployment came to an end the scenes piled up like a playlist of pain and despair that played on shuffle every time he closed his eyes.
James would find himself deployed twice more after that each time adding scenes to his collection but he had decided that he wouldn't let them change him. They were part of him and he came to understand that it was part of what happened when you saw traumatic events unfold before you. The years continued to pass and soon he found himself stationed in a reserve base in Texas. An old airbase from the second world war that had since become a weigh point for the reserve air and marine forces on standby if needed. James didn't fully mind it in all honesty, it was nice not having to worry about attacks in the night or trying to sleep with the thought that it was a near guarantee that he'd be sent out again the coming day. That was until the dead began to walk the earth.
It's been a year and a half since that day, James tries not to remember it. The lose of life and the screams still echo in the night; Sometimes louder than that of the ones from overseas. As the time went and the cluster of soldiers and base staff that were left along with what remained of the people of Fort Worth secured their position and the small area around the base He grew to cherish what remained of humanity. What happened to his family still weighs on his mind heavily but James chooses to focus on what's right in front of him, the people that are there now and that need him, and everyone else on the base to do their job. Day by day, week by week, month by month they push on. In his off time James helps out around the civilian farms and whatever he finds to be done. The leader of the civilian populace always tends to show his appreciation and it even earned him a couple of dinners in the man's presence. Real stand up guy in James opinion, His kids are pretty goofy though, Especially his youngest who always reminds James of his younger sister.
Now he finds his comfort in the people around him, His drive in protecting them and to aid them to strive he sets out each day with that goal in mind and with each breath he drives himself to that end.
