Overall Personality: Sam was diagnosed at a young age with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Fortunately, he resides on the high functioning end of the spectrum. He is generally stable and can self manage his daily life with few difficulties. However he
does have certain personality traits which make interacting with people and his environment difficult in certain cirumstances. He is quite slow to adapt to changes and often bucks social norms, often without realizing it, or why those norms exist in the first place.
Even Though Yesterday's Gone
History: Sam and his brother were attending a Scout Camp in North Carolina when the outbreak occurred. After the world ended, the boys stayed at the camp with their fellow Scouts and adult leaders for several months before the troop decided to try and get back to Maine. On their way from North Carolina to Maine, the boys watched their numbers dwindle until it was just Sam and his brother Sean. They have continued on however, and made it to Virginia. Sam has adapted to the world as it is with the help of his brother, and is able to function for the most part. He relies on Sean for a great many things however, not the least of which is to maintain a routine, and to provide some form of structure. While his Autism can be seen as a hindrance in the ever shifting landscape of the new world, it also has the effect of shielding him from the destabilizing trauma of how the world fell. To him, what mattered most wasn't his family or his home, but the rules by which one lived. Sam doesn't think about home. His condition affords him the ability to only live in the here and now, which most people who remember the old world well have had a hard time doing.
