It had been a month since the day it happened, the day the one person the young redhead had managed to find a sliver of trust in was ripped from her and she was once again orphaned in the hellish landscape of once was America. The roads twisted and turned through the glass windows of the old Altima she had driven away from the scene, Her feet barely reaching the peddles it was only thanks to Tobi that she was able to operate the vehicle at all. The lessons he had given her and the small blocks he had attached to the peddles allowing her to reach them while also seeing out of the windshield were probably the best damn gifts she had received since the end of the world, Maybe even the best since even before then. Watching as the flat plains of the panhandle slowly be replaced with the hills and valleys of Colorado Sophia watched as the small black rod of plastic in the fuel gauge dropped past the red mark and the fuel light came on. "Great, Perfect, Amazing!" she ranted to herself, the road ahead looked clear enough but the only buildings she had seen since entering the state had been the small outcropping when she was coming in, and that was about an hour back the way she came.

Hearing the engine begin to putter her face flushed with annoyance, up ahead a green sign that read "LAMAR: NEXT EXIT" grew bigger by the second as the car barreled down the road ahead of her, "Alright you piece of shit car, give me three miles, just three miles and you can abandon me too." she growled, her nails digging into the steering wheel as the sign went flying past the side of the car and into the distance. On the horizon was the telltale markings of a town up ahead, scattered buildings began littering the sides of the roads, "Outskirts. Thank you." she said to herself. Pulling the car to the side of the building she pulled her pistol out and secured the silencer onto the end, still the same one she had before she had made a point to only use it in emergencies; Thankfully that time hadn't come yet and as she pulled the hammer from the back seat and held it tight in her hand she popped the door open and hoped out.

Looking around the area Sophia confirmed to herself that the immediate surroundings where safe before turning her attention to the first building, it's pealing teal paint flaking at random intervals along the wall she looked it over before turning to the treeline that bordered the backyard of the houses in the community. Escape route, that way. She thought to herself with a nod towards the tree's. Turning even further, across the way and on the other side of the car sat the other house, like the last it's paint had long begun to peal and it's state of disrepair was evident by the fallen branch protruding from the roof somewhere near the rear of the house. "Okay, this house first then." she said to herself in a low whisper while turning back to the teal wall of the first dwelling. Shutting the door of the car with great care as to not cause enough noise to wake up anything dead or alive that may lie around the area she noted to herself how eerie the area was, the chilly evening air accompanied the fog in a manner some would associate with a horror movie. Creeping around the rear of the vehicle Sophia kept her weapon grasped tightly in her hand, her pistol rested in it's holster along her ankle while the hammer stayed in her left hand, her right free to interact with things and reach for her pistol if needed, Stay low, stay quiet, take them out quietly. She reminded herself as she crept up the stairs to the rear porch, the fence that bordered the backyard long ago had since fallen and rested among the overgrown lawn. Getting to the screen door that sat half hanging off it's hinges Sophia peered in, the darkness of the building accompanying the eerie silence of the area, the only light being cast by the sun as it crept it's way through windows and doors. "Welp, here we go again." she said to herself once more before crossing the threshold, what she would find on the other side was still up to be discovered but what she hoped for was shelter, the storm clouds in the distance had recently been accompanied by thunder and the rain was sure to follow shortly after. Her pack had a few cans of food and some of Tobi's signature power bars remaining although they weren't to last long. "This place better have a lockable room or something." she growled under her breath as she began to clear the building.

Passing through the door Sophia found herself in a small storage room off the kitchen, The door further into the building sat open and on the floor a blood trail leading further in and out of sight. Her hair stood on end at the sight sending her into full guard mode as she crept her way towards the passage leading into the kitchen. Placing her free hand against the door frame as she neared the young girl gripped the handle of her hammer tightly as the scene began to reveal itself, The trail of blood led out of the kitchen and further into the house, on the counter sat a radio, it's power light still on. Beside rested a bag with it's main pouch hanging open and it's content revealed. "Fuck yea," she said quietly before turning her attention to where the trail of blood led, Starting near the radio and bag Sophia could piece together that the blood more than likely belonged to whoever owned them and that they more than likely are still around, Now, whether they were alive or dead was another question. One she wasn't keen on finding the answer to.

Delving further into the house she passed through the open area that served as a doorway to the kitchen, before her spread out in a wide open room was what must have once served as a living room, Sofa's rested along the wall, opposite sat a TV, not a small one either. A low whistle made it's way out of the red head at the sight. But now wasn't the time. Resting on the far sofa was the source of the blood, a woman, maybe twenty-five or so with a chunk of her arm missing and a crud bandage wrapped around it. Nearby in the corner rested what Sophia guessed was the cause of the injury. A deadhead with a clean bullet hole in it's head, it's form in a heap in the corner. It was then the woman spoke. "It's dead sweety." The woman's voice feeble and weak Sophia felt no need to be confrontational. "I-I knew that." she spoke as she put distance between her and the body, just in case. "Not before he got a lucky bite in though.." the woman then said, dejected and sad. "And to think a kid is what finds me first.." Sophia frowned in annoyance at the word. "I ain't a kid lady." she growled before going quiet again. The woman only smiled, the pain was clearly getting to her and she wasn't long for this world.

Coming to stand near the woman's head Sophia came to her knee's to be at the woman's level. "Look, lady, Sorry." she said awkwardly, The annoyance that being called a child brought was basically a natural response for the girl by this point and although she would have meant it to someone that was all well and alive she regretting snapping at the dying woman on the couch. "No.. I'm Sorry Sweetheart, It was my mistake for assuming that a child could exist out here and still be called that." A tinge of regret crossed Sophia's mind. "I'm Laura." the woman spoke which caused Sophia to look in her direction awkwardly. "Um, Hi. Not much for names these days, Red is the general nickname people give me though." she said awkwardly bringing her free hand to grasp at the back of her neck. It was clear the dying woman wasn't a threat to her but what about anyone else? Was she alone out here? She needed to know. "So, is that your stuff in the kitchen?" she asked. "The radio and the bag." The woman smiled and nodded her head. "Yes, they are." she said before wincing in pain. "The radio is tuned to the Haven Frequency. Take it and call them, tell them where you got the radio and that you need help and they'll come, They know Where I was today."

Wincing again the woman sat herself up as best she could and gave Sophia a good look over. "What's this sweetie?" she asked as she brought her unbitten hand to trace an X along her face. "It's nothing, Nothing that matters anyway." Sophia said as she quickly turned to hide the mark from her. "Alright, Your secrets are yours to keep." the woman answered, Which Sophia greatly appreciated, Prying people were the worst. "I don't got much time left darlin, I don't wanna make you do something as terrible as kill another living thing but.. You know what happens when you get bit.." Sophia returned her gaze to the woman, "Yea, I do." she said, her tone noticeably quieter now as Tobi's face came to mind, it had only been a month since she had to make sure he wouldn't turn and now it was looking like she was going to half to do it again, although, She hoped that it would be easier with someone she didn't know at all. The woman began to wheeze and caugh, blood found its way to her collar and as it did she brought herself into a hunched position from the force of the cough. The fit lasted for a solid ten seconds and after so her body fell limp. "Miss? You alright?" Sophia asked as she shot to her feet from the sudden burst of sound and movement. "It's time Sweetie. Do it." the woman said, somehow her voice had grown even weaker than before, Sophia raised her hammer above her head. "Wait." The woman spoke. "Not with that, it'll get messy fast with that. Here, Use this.." she said as she motioned towards the knife that rested around her thigh. "You'll have to get it, I don't think I can.." Sophia obliged her request, Hell, she'll even get a new blade after all this is over. bringing the knife to rest on the couch near the edge Sophia slid the hammer into a belt loop before fetching it, the woman had once again gone into a fit of coughing, this one more intense than the last the woman's body fell limp and unmoving on the cushion, blood began to pool on the floor from the open wound. "Miss? You there?" Sophia repeated, but this time, there was no answer. Bringing the knife above her head Tobi's face flashed in her mind, the scene of having to end him in the same manner flooded back and tears began to make their way into her eyes as a soft whimper sounded, taking a deep breath the girl found herself crying for the woman, "I'm sorry.." she said as he blade fell and struck true.

Digging the knife from the woman's head Sophia looked at the scene in front of her, the now dead corpse that was just moments ago a living, breathing human. But the human she saw wasn't the woman she had just ended, the human she saw was Tobi. Feeling the strength give in her legs she felt herself fall to the ground; In a haze of emotions the young redhead came to rest against the couch upon which the now dead member of Haven resided. "Why's everything so fucked up now man... All you had to do was stay quiet and not get caught by the fucking deadhead near the door and you'd still be here...." she brooded with a balled fist and tear filled eyes, Where would she go now? Where could she go now? Thinking on it she remembered the name the woman had mentioned, 'Heaven', But what kind of people where these people? Where they all nice and gulable like the woman resting above her seemed to have been? Or were people like her in the minority? These questions kept her occupied enough to shove the thoughts of Tobi back in her mind, "Okay, Okay." she repeated as she steadied herself and wiped the tears. "Plan, Plan. Get gas, get out of here, Don't get caught by the deadheads or living assholes. Simple right? Yea.." She started, but as she did the radio in the other room chirped into life.

"Haven to Laura, Come in Laura." the voice on the other end spoke with authority in his tone, "Laura, come in." the voice repeated. "Great. Just great." Sophia sighed, pushing herself to her feet she shook away the thoughts of Tobi that still clawed at her consciousness as she made her way through the door back into the kitchen, the blood trail sat underfoot as she reached the radio, instead of answering it however she heard Tobi's voice in her head telling her to not attract any unwanted attention. Taking the radio in her hand as it sparked to life once more she only caught the first part of what he man was saying before she clicked the power nob to the off position, "Shut up dude." she said as the radio fell silent, "Okay, so they're coming to look for her, that's fine. They'll come, I'll hide, they'll leave, I'll tail. Simple." she ran the plan through her mind, "But first. Gas, god lady you better have driven here." she said as she grabbed the woman's bag from the counter and threw it over her other shoulder, her own pack fully on the extra weight made moving awkward but this wasn't the time to open it up and see what she had. Making her way back outside she came to her car and popped the back door open, throwing the woman's pack in along with her own before shutting it again. Popping the trunk open she came to stand at the front corner of the house to search for a car, or whatever the woman hopefully had driven to the area. "Bingo." The words came with the discovery of just that. A small blue pickup along the road across the street, Too clean to be an old abandoned wreck it was clear to her what it was.

Returning to her vehicle she fetched the siphoning gear Tobi had taught her how to use over the course of time he was also teaching her to drive, No, don't think about that now, stay focused. She thought as she shook her head. Pulling a gas canister from the trunk as well she carried all of the supplies across the street to the truck and set to work, taking a few minutes to get everything set up it was basically a waiting game now, entertain yourself while you wait for the fuel to fill the canister, and so Sophia whistled. It wasn't a good tune by any means but it helped keep her mind occupied and in turn off of Tobi and everything she had lost. Some time later she heard the gurgle of fuel as it began to overflow and splatter to the concrete, "Dammit." she growled as she set to stopping the flow. Fetching all the gear she returned to her car shortly after, and good too as a few deadheads had begun to shamble out of the adjacent houses. Quickly filling the tank of her vehicle with as much fuel as she could get in before the weight of the canister began to get to her she packed it all back up and returned to the drivers seat. Making sure the doors were locked she turned the key in the ignition and watched as the needle in the gas gauge slowly crept back up, stopping just short of half a tank Sophia nodded, "Whatever, that'll work for now." and with that she threw the car in reverse and made her way to a small outcropping of tree's close by, dense enough to hide the car nearly completely she shut it off and snuck back to the underbrush that sat adjacent to the house the woman was in. "Now we play the waiting game, great." Sophia sighed, she hated waiting, especially when that waiting involved sitting outside. But she didn't want to risk running into more of those people, didn't want to find out the hard way if they're savage or normal. A small part of her hoped they were bandits and that she'd have a place among them but at the moment she knew she needed supplies, and nice members are a hell of a lot easier to get that from. Settling in she made sure she was concealed and began to wait for whoever was on the other end of the radio to arrive.

Making their way down the back country road Haley and her younger sister Katey looked around at the scenery, the wind funneled into the rear of the truck from the half cracked windows and as the tree's began to interweave with houses Haley tapped her sisters shoulder telling her to roll the window up. Watching the passing houses the blonde kept her eyes peeled for any sign of threats, alive or otherwise. Most of the houses looked very much abandoned and void of anything that might provide them with what they searched for, Shelter for the night. Her left foot tapped on the floorboard as the overgrown houses passed them by, one after another they came and went. Tree's fallen through their roofs, holes in the walls from one travesty or another. None suitable for the duo and Haley felt the annoyance begin to build in her mind.

They had already been on the road for nearly the whole day and it wasn't gonna be long before the sun met the horizon and the moon replaced it as the dominant feature in the sky. "Keep an eye out Kat, We need to find a place to hunker down." She said to her sister. Katey nodded. "Yea, Okay.. I really don't wanna sleep in the truck again.." she grumbled. "I know kid." Minutes turned into an hour and as the duo made their way through each small cluster of housing Haley's annoyance grew. "Just give us one good house." she growled under her breath, Her fingers tapped on the steering wheel as the fourth cluster of houses began to fall away. But then, she saw it. Near the end of the row on the left side of the street sat a nearly fully intact structure, a white pickup sat in front of it, it's gas cap hanging by it's attachment. "There." Katey said as she pointed at the very same building that had caught her eye. "Good eye Kat." Haley said as she brought her arm to pat her sister on the back.

Shortly their car veered into the driveway, coming to a stop directly behind the seemingly abandoned truck. "Alright Kat, you know the drill, Hide and wait for me to come get you when it's clear alright?" Without waiting for an answer Haley put the vehicle in park and turned it off before fetching her rifle from the rear. "Good hunting." Came the soft spoken voice of Katey as the door flung shut before her. Watching as Haley went towards the build she waited until she disappeared through the door before climbing into the floorboard of the vehicle and covered herself with the blanket that sat in a clump by her feet.

Haley made her way to the door, her weapon readied for anything that sat behind it she took notice of the fact the door was slightly open as she approached, tempted to call out she shut the idea out of her mind, "Better stay quiet." She said to herself in a low whisper. Pressing the door open ever so slightly she brought her weapon up as she crossed the threshold into what looked to be a kitchen area, on the floor was a trail of blood and further in she discovered the body of a woman on the couch, a bite mark on her arm and a knife wound in her head. She kept her weapon trained on the body as she passed. Proceeding up the stairs it seemed that whoever the woman was had cleared the place before she had taken he fall. Clearing the rest of the building in short order she set to returning to the front door of the building. Making her way back outside she got to the side of the truck, looking in she saw some survival gear. While she did however a small figure crept out from behind the tree's, moving like a shadow across the street and to the other side of the truck.

Haley made her way around the back and the figure watched on. When her back was turned to the figure it stood up. "You with them?" The voice came.

"Are you, with them? I ain't askin again lady." Sophia repeated, her tone harsh and hurried as she held her pistol in the woman's direction, Seeing them approach a few moments before Sophia was on edge to say the least. If they were with whoever that girl was, from this 'Eden' or whatever they called it then they may be the best ticket to supplies and food she'll find around, but if they weren't then maybe they had something of use themselves. Her mind thought over what she would do in each instance as she waited for a response from the woman who had her hand in the air, her other however still rested near her waist. "You really gonna try something lady? Come on, I'm small, I'm not stupid." The little red head said as she took a few steps closer. Planning on pressing the pistol against the woman's back to intimidate her Sophia's hand began to shake at the thought, Stealing from people was one thing, but the prospect of killing them, That was another. Not that she was planning on doing that or anything.

It was then however, as the pistol met the cloth of the woman's shirt that she was caught off guard. Instead of tensing up like everyone Tobi had done this to had, the woman stayed noticeably relaxed. 'She didn't flinch? But.. It's loaded! Is she not scared?' Sophia thought as she let her eye move to the woman's hand that was already moving; Within an instant Sophia found herself on the floor coughing in pain as the air was forced out of her lungs from the impact. Realizing what had just happened Sophia tried to quickly come back to her feet, but her gun was gone. 'Where is it?!' she shouted internally as her eyes darted around where she had just fallen. Too late.

"Stop." The woman's voice commanded from behind her. "Don't make me do it again."

"Do it again? What the fuck are you talking about? Where the fucks my gun?" She spat as she spun to face the woman, Who now had her gun. "Fuck.. Great job wonder woman." She said, sarcasm seeping out of her words. "Well? You one of them or not?" She asked again, although she wasn't in any position to ask questions now. She didn't care.

"Language kid, you can't be more than fifteen." the woman came, annoyance in her tone. "Talk to me like a normal human and I might answer your question." She added, Sophia's gun now pointing back at herself.

"Fuck you lady." Sophia growled.

"Fine." The woman shrugged, "I'm taking this and going then." She said, holding the pistol up to draw attention to it as she turned to walk back towards her vehicle.

Sophia's mind raced with what to do, She couldn't fight her, she'd just end up on the ground again, she didn't have her pistol anymore and now the woman, whoever she was was now walking away with it. "Wait!" Sophia called, the woman's steps stopped. "Yes?" came the woman's voice. "Fine.. You wanna be civil, then lets be civil. Who are you?" Sophia asked, defiance still in her tone as she bit her lip holding back what she really wanted to say. "See? Was that so hard?" The woman asked. "Haley. And you?"

Sophia's face contorted with annoyance. "Red. Can I have my pistol back?" She asked as she got to her feet, brushing off the dust before stretching the arm Haley had just used to bring her to the ground. "Well, 'Red', I'm going to assume there's a reason you don't tell people your actual name, That's fine." Haley's tone softened a little, telling that she was used to dealing with tantrums, "But no, We aren't with anyone. Whoever you're talking about." She then added as she looked down at the pistol Sophia was using.

"What?" Sophia asked as she saw her look down at the weapon. "Can I have it back now?" she asked impatiently. Haley looked at her. "Maybe, After you answer a few questions yourself." Sophia crossed her arms. "Fine, whatever. Just ask." She said, disgruntled at the prospect of having to answer questions herself, This wasn't how she planned on this going down, 'Man, This went so much smoother in my mind.. I should have just stayed hidden..' She thought "Well?" Sophia growled again. "Okay, First question 'red'. What's Eden?" Haley asked, her hand fiddling with the grip of the girls pistol.

"Fuck if I know. The lady in there said something about contacting them if I ever needed anything and someone started talking through her radio about how she was overdue for a checkin so I was waitin for them to show. Thought you were them." She spoke the truth, even though her tone didn't match it she tilted her head. "Anything else?"

"What lady? You aren't talking about the lady that's dead on the couch are you?" Haley asked as she too crossed her arms.

"Yea, I was peru- Looking for supplies when I saw her truck, found her bit on the couch." Sophia tried to hide the sadness that shot through her mind at the words, Bringing her back to what she had done, not only once now, but twice. The first time being ten times worse she tried to shake the thought away. "Look lady. I was lookin for supplies, found that chick, She died, but before she did she told me she was from some place called Eden which is apparently up north of here somewhere. Someone said they were sending someone to check on her since she was overdue or whatever, I was waiting for them to show up to do what I just did to you, I thought you were them, Turns out your wonder woman instead. Can I have my gun back now? I'll just find somewhere else."

Staring the woman down Sophia uncrossed her arms. "So. What now lady?"

Satisfied with the girls answer Haley uncrossed her arms, "You didn't have to-" she started to ask but by the look the girls face contorted in to at the words Haley could guess the answer. "Sorry kid." Haley then said, her tone going grim with the prospect of what the redhead must of had to do. "What now? Well, how'd you get here?" Haley asked as her eyes looked around the area for any companion the girl might of had as long as the means of transport she would have used. Turning her gaze back to the girl after concluding she must truly be alone and not seeing any form of transport other than the truck that presumably belonged to the woman that now lay dead in the building and her own she felt a tinge of concern for the girl. Even if she was confrontational and had some traumatic experience going off the scar that stretched across her cheek she was still a kid, and Haley wasn't one to just abandon someone, especially someone around the age of one of her own family members who's whereabouts were still unknown. "How are you getting out of here kid?" she asked

Sophia kept her eyes on the woman's feet as she listened to her speak, making sure to watch for any movement just in case she needed to run away, not that Haley was giving her any clues that she would need to do that, it was habit by this point. Wanting to shout in protest at the woman calling her a child she opted to only growl the words under her breath as she listened further on what the woman had to say. "If you have to know I have a car." the redhead said, "Like I said lady, I'll leave if you just give me my gun back." She repeated before holding her hand out for the weapon.

"But where will you go?" Haley asked as her eyes fell to the hand before her, the girl seemed amendment that she could handle herself but even so it just didn't feel right to send her off in to the unknown by herself.

Sophia took a deep breath before sighing deeply. "I told you. whoever the people that chick was with is coming to check on her, I don't think they're gonna be very happy when they find her dead so I'm gonna stay hidden until they leave and then follow them back to wherever they go."

Haley nodded, "By yourself?" She asked again, although she assumed the question would spark another bout of rebellion she asked anyway.

"Yes. You got a problem with that?" Sophia barked.

'Wow, I was like this as a kid? Sorry mom...' Haley thought as her assumption came true, her mind coming to the realization that she used to act nearly the same way with her own parents she began to realize how annoying it must have been to deal with it "Yo-" She started to say something else but was interrupted by the sound of distant engines approaching.

"Shit! Lady, move your car." Sophia shouted "If they see you it'll ruin everything. Please. And please give me my weapon back."

Haley didn't have time to think, if what Red had said was true then it would be a bad idea to be around when they find their dead comrade. Quickly making sure the safety was on on the weapon she handed the pistol back to the girl before she saw her dart back around the road and in to the tree's. 'is that where she came from?' she wondered as she crossed to the drivers seat and turned over the engine. "What's up?" Katey asked taking notice of the urgency in her sisters actions. "People are comin, could be bad." Haley said in a quick and to the point fashion as she spun the vehicle out of the driveway and into a small outcropping of tree's down the way making sure the truck was hidden from view of anyone that would come to park in the driveway before she turned the engine back off. "That kid better be telling the truth." Haley grimaced as she leaned back in her seat. "Where'd she run off to anyway?" she asked herself again.

A few seconds later a knock on her window caused her to shoot up and grab her gun instinctively "Shit! Get down." she yelled as she brought the weapon up, but relaxed at what was standing outside. The redhead was motioning for her to follow. As Haley opened the door cautiously she heard the girl speak. "It's them, They got these really ugly ski resort logos on their chests." she said as she looked back towards the opening in the tree's

"Thought you were following them? Why are you here?" Haley asked, thinking the girl would use the opportunity to make as much distance between them and her after getting their gun back.

"Umm.. Yea... About that.. They, Sorta found my ride... I don't exactly have a way to follow them now..." Sophia's tone was annoyed, but not the same kind as before, this time it was more of a disappointed annoyance.

Haley smiled. "Ah, But I thought you hated us?" she said, playfully.

"Don't get any weird idea's wonder woman, You're tough and didn't try to shoot me after you took my gun, that's all. So... Can you give me a ride? I sorta.. Lost all my supplies as well..." Sophia seemed to hate asking for help, to tell the truth Haley was as well, although she had grown to accept that she couldn't do everything by herself she nodded. "Hop in."

Waiting for the girl to get situated she looked back and began to introduce Katey but before she could her sister leapt into action ""Hey there! I'm Katey!, What's your name? With that the journey started, where it would lead them was up to the convoy that was now a good distance away from them, just barely on the horizon they followed on.
