It's Just Who You Are
Likes: Spending time with his daughter, whiskey, alone time, running, folk and blue music
Dislikes: Crowds, heights, arrogance/cockiness, people that talk too much, wasting time
Strengths:
- EMT training
- Ability to resist indulging in addiction (below) when it seriously compromises the safety of his people
- Ability to read people
Habits: Smokes when it’s available, but doesn’t have a habit; Has a mild-moderate dependence on benzos/tranquilizers stemming from a job-related PTSD diagnosis
Flaws:
- Benzo/tranquilizer dependence (moderate); Stems from a PTSD diagnosis from past career
- Difficulty staying in larger groups; Must obsessively know a way out
- Generally suspicious and distrustful of people; Assumes an ulterior motive
Dreams/goals: Didn’t really have a great deal of ambition beyond his current EMT/fire career and raising his daughter
Fears: Allowing his PTSD and/or dependence to impact the lives of his wife and/or daughter
Overall Personality: Jason comes from a trio of siblings who all early on adopted the practice of canning their emotions and playing it close to the chest. He sometimes has to consciously monitor that habit so that he does not appear to be withholding when it comes to his wife and daughter. He has a propensity to come off as uncaring or even a bit aggressive to new faces, where generally these are not actually his feelings toward them. He is, however, skeptical and somewhat distrustful of most people, generally assuming an ulterior motive. And although he is certainly not closed to traveling with groups of companions, he has a veiled anxious tendency to always know a way out for himself and his family. This can make bonding with a group difficult.
Even Though Yesterday's Gone
History: - Jason and his brother (David, the middle) and sister (Jordan, the youngest) grew up in Bellevue, WA for most of their childhood. When he was 14, (David 10, Jordan 7) their mother passed away from pancreatic cancer. Their father subsequently moved them to Columbus, Ohio. He was never abusive, but struggled with a debilitating depression. Jason met his future wife, Sydney, in his sophomore year of college, where she was a nursing major, with the ultimate goal of attaining her MSN and becoming a practitioner. David enlisted after graduating from Marshall University, and at 18 Jordan moved to Portland, OR to chase an unhealthy relationship, which led to an opiate addiction. Jason and Sydney had their daughter, Kate when he was 23 and she 22. They ultimately both accepted jobs in Michigan, which is where they were leading up to the outbreak. During the days leading up to the collapse, Jason and his family, and Jordan, had made joyous arrangements to fly to Atlanta, where their brother David was getting married. He had been stationed at Fort Benning for some time. This would be the first time the Harris siblings had all been together under one roof since Ohio. On the night before chaos struck the city, Jason’s family picked Jordan up at the airport in a semi-emotional reunion (albeit somewhat awkward, because they both play it pretty close to the vest). That evening, over a beer, she revealed to her brother that her plane ticket had been one-way. She had secretly taken a second job, saved enough money to put herself through a detox, and left her toxic relationship behind. It was an incredible milestone evening for her. For the family. She’d always had a monumental strength. Maybe it comes with having two older brothers. Knowing that they needed to be up early the next morning to meet with their brother and go through ceremony details, etc., they split into their separate rooms. But the following morning’s events would bring an unexpected change of plans.
-Day of the Outbreak-
- Jason awakes to the rushed sound of feet in the hall outside their room. He assumes maybe some children are eager to get to the pool. But there must be a lot of them. And then banging on walls and doors? He gets up and rubs his eyes and his senses gradually begin to sharpen as his cortisol spikes. He starts to make out the sound of shouting outside. Sydney stirs as well and gets out of bed. The sounds swell. And then... sirens? They open their window to a street jammed with people running like a stream from something. They quickly get dressed. Kate is up and moving as well. Jason quietly slips a 9mm Taurus down the back of his pants, grip covered by his EMT hoodie. He unlocks his phone to text his brother and sees that he already had an unread message. It urges them stay away from downtown, that his unit has been called out to suppress some mysterious unrest. Jason cautions his wife and daughter to stay in the room for a minute. He goes across the hall and knocks on his sister’s door. Jordan is already up and was as aware of their surroundings as Jason. He cautions her to stay locked in, but of course, she’s having none of that. So the two go downstairs (intentionally avoiding the elevator) to the hotel lobby. It’s utter chaos. Terrified people running in. Running out. All panicked. Several bleeding. Some lying on the ground, seemingly unconscious. There are overwhelmed uniformed police trying to direct the mess to no avail, and a few paramedics, some performing compressions, others applying pressure to stop blood flow. His mind leaps to the prescription of Alprazolam in his bag back in the room. The two agree they need to get Sydney and Kate and get away from the crowd. As they turn, they’re met with a fright by Sydney and Kate, who couldn’t stay put. Syd had scrolled through local news, pulling out vague packets of information: something about an undocumented virus... unprovoked violence... spreading... riots... It was apparently already happening in most states. Syd hands him his bag, which she had brought down. They rush to an overburdened EMT treating what appears to be a victim of an animal attack and show him their credentials. Credentials be damned, they were accepting any help they could get. Syd and Jason agree this is the family’s best way out of dodge. Syd and Jason step into the back of an ambulance with the emergency personnel, and Jordan and Kate cram into the front passenger side. Partway to the hospital the patient flatlines. But soon the eyes open and he pops up off the gurney and lands a bite on Sydney’s forearm. She, Jason, and the other EMTs are able to struggle the patient away from her. She comes away with a relatively minor bite. They’re able to dress it and stop the bleeding. They reach the hospital and meet Clint Amrine, an overwhelmed trauma surgeon (I picture Terrence Howard). As things fall apart at the hospital, the group bugs out, and eventually aligns with another small pocket of survivors who plan to take shelter in a shopping center in a suburb outside the overcrowded city.
-Post-Apocalypse Life-
- (At this point I kind of picture inserted into a group that parallels the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake). Syd ultimately takes an infection and dies while they’re hiding out. This throws Jason into a psychological spiral that almost costs him everything. The group eventually fractures, with most of the survivors going with the escape to the marina plan, but Jason seeing this as a bad idea and opting out. He and his family stealthily making a break for the woods when the dead are drawn off by the others’ fortified vehicles. Along the way they find a couple of overturned military units, mostly picked clean. He manages to pick up a tomahawk, a canteen, and a jacket. The tomahawk comes in handy for the scattered dead they encounter. From this point forward it’s all about keeping his daughter and sister safe and alive. They travel for a while with a group that claims to have a man with a cure, if only they can get him to DC, but they get separated along the road.
(OOC: At this point, I can adjust their current situation to fit a storyline if someone has an opening they think would be good for these people in their moving storyline =D )
