Zane walked quietly down the cracked and battered sidewalk. His eyes were narrowed as he followed the path. It was already mid afternoon. Far later in the day than he wanted it to be. He was running out of time and loosing patience. Every second he was away from her was another second he was loosing his mind. Every moment that Madison was lost and alone in the world was another moment he could have been helping her.
In Zane's mind she needed him. She was just scared. That's why she ran away, but she also disobeyed him. So she would have to be punished. He couldn't help that. By punishing her he was making her a better wife. A more subserviently wife. She must be so lost and alone without him. He thought. Zane was by clinical definitions; a sociopath. Cold, and unfeeling he had a deluded sense of entitlement. There were corpses walking all up and down the street. They turned their heads to Zane as he walked.
Zane barely took notice of them to be honest. He was singularly focused on the task at hand. He was sure she had been here. He was hot on her trail. He had just barely missed her a few days ago. She was staying in some dingy side of the road motel. The sheets were still warm when he found the deserted room. He almost rescued her a night later when he saw a glimpse of her purple hair just barely escaping the cold lifeless grasp of dead fingers. "I'm coming my love." He said quietly. More dead eyes turned to meet his gaze. They were shambling closer now. Zane had no time for the dead.
Instead of engaging them he slipped inside the first building he saw. The air inside was dull and musty. Stale to the taste and almost stifling Zane's nostril's curled as he recoiled from the unpleasant smell. She was close. He knew it. Soft thuds rained against the side of the building as the walkers outside pounded fruitlessly. They were riled up and hungry now. Zane wore a sharp black jean jacket and black jeans. His shoes were neatly laced and tied. His hair slicked back and combed, hell even his facial hair was neatly groomed. Zane paid attention to these things. Especially so close to his reunion. He wanted everything to be perfect when he was reunited with Madison.
He was not alone inside this building. He was not the only monster that loomed in the dark. Zane let out a sharp whistle. For a moment there was nothing. Only silence and anticipation. Then he heard the shuffling. Zane jerked his head hard to the left, and then the right letting out a groan as his neck cracked and popped. He was ready to vent a little frustration. He was disappointed to see it was only one of them. He made a disgusted face as she stumbled out of the dark. Her dress was torn and tattered. Someone obviously didn't love her enough to keep her safe. To keep her from turning to this pathetic creature. "Honey, you have seen better days." He said quietly. It stumbled closer, but Zane did not move.
He waited for it to get close enough to fill his nostrils with the rancid smell of it's flesh before he moved. Zane picked up a heavy book off a nearby table and swung it at it's leg. The hardbound book broke it's brittle, dry bones like a number two pencil. He aimed for it's leg. He wasn't trying to kill it. Just incapacitate it. Zane picked up one end of the desk and dropped it on the creature's arm pinning it down to the floor after it fell. It reached and clawed; desperately reaching for him. Zane sat on the desk and crossed his legs. A heavy sigh escaped his lips.
"I'm sorry someone didn't love you." He said softly. There was almost a sorrow in his voice. "I love someone. Very much. She doesn't know just how devoted I am to our love, but she will. She is the most beautiful creature I have ever laid eyes on. She stole my heart." He spoke with a smile as the low growls continued to claw at his feet that were just out of reach.
He was actually having a conversation with it. Waiting for the ones outside to loose interest. "Her name is Madison. She was brought to me by the heavens. Had to be because she is a literal angel." Zane rubbed the stitched up scar on his neck. "She loves me you know. She's just scared. She didn't mean what she did. She..." Zane's voice stopped abruptly as he heard another sound in the room besides his own egotistical voice.....
