Even Though Yesterday's Gone
History: As her full name may suggest, Sévèrine is of noble descent, being born in Montpellier into a wealthy noble French family. Her family was once 7th in line for the French throne until the French Revolution in 1789. Since birth she led a privileged life, getting the best education money could buy and spending it among her peers, other nobles and descendants of 'old money' in a private boarding school in Switzerland.
At age 8, Sévèrine's father died in a mountain climbing accident, and as the oldest child Sévèrine inherited his title, making her the Viscountess of Saint-Alby, and the youngest viscountess France had ever known. It was also her parents' wish that she would one day assume control of the family enterprise, which consisted of shipping companies of both commercial and cruise ships, and various cosmetic laboratories.
After graduating high school Sévèrine took a sabbatical year, living the jetset life and traveling the world in one of her family's yachts with her entourage. After the first six months though, after being confronted with some of the poverty in the world, Sévèrine had an epiphany and left the yacht, traveling by plane as a regular tourist to third world countries. It was then she decided she wanted to be a doctor, instead of ruling a shipping and cosmetics empire.
Her mother was hesitant of Sévèrine's decision at first, but finally made peace with it. Deciding she'd be better in a place where fewer people knew her, Sévèrine decided to study in the USA, and got accepted into Harvard Medical School. As a new arrival in the US, Sévèrine decided not to tell anyone she was of noble descent and instead live as a normal girl on campus. She was able to get in a sorority and live in a house among other girls without any of them finding out who she really was.
For five years Sévèrine was able to study medicine, and live life as a commoner until the outbreak happened. Initially the university campus was a safe zone, until it finally got overrun. Sévèrine and her group were able to hold up in the suburbs, but decided to move on after the US Army bombed Boston into oblivion. Sévèrine and her friends headed northeast into Maine, with the plan of crossing the border and heading into Nova Scotia eventually.
Unfortunately, one day in the summer as Sévèrine bathed in a river, she was seen by members of the Cult of Dagon who believed her to be a mermaid, due to Sévèrine's pale complexion and the singing she did as she washed herself. They kidnapped her and brought her to their camp where their leader, the High Priestess, confirmed she was a mermaid who had shed her tail once she came on land. Once Sévèrine noticed the behavior of the cultists, it became apparent that most of them were drugged by something they called 'the mist'.
For weeks Sévèrine was mistreated and abused, being fed a substance the cult called 'black wine', which almost made her believe herself that she was in fact a mermaid due to the vivid hallucinations it caused. Then, after a confrontation with the High Priestess, Sévèrine was able to figure out it was all just make believe. Then, the worst kind of torture was wrought upon Sévèrine. In order to convince the already gullible cultists that she was indeed a mermaid, Sévèrine was locked in a basin of seawater. Each night, the High Priestess would sow shark skin and fishtails into Sévèrine's legs to create the illusion that the seawater made her return to her mermaid state.
Sévèrine would've died from infection if it hadn't been for a young man called 'The Coward' feeding her antibiotics on the down low, slowing the infection from the wounds. Then, one day he set her free and told her to run. Sévèrine was able to escape the camp and started running, but her disappearance was quickly discovered and the cultists gave chase. She ran, delirious with fever from the infected wounds and sown in fish skins on her legs, until the cultists almost caught up with her.
Then, all of a sudden, a group of people who looked like they came out of a WWII movie stood in front of her, and Sévèrine finally collapsed, leaving the people in oldstyle GI battle dresses to deal with her pursuers and get her to safety.
But Who Are You Really?
