The Location: Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine
History:
Bar Harbor has been a haven for summer vacationers for more than two centuries. Wabanaki people and their ancestors lived on the land for thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans in their homeland, and continue to have an important presence in this place today. Archaeologists have evidence that indicates Native Americans first arrived on Mount Desert Island around 5,000 years ago. They were followed by the French and then the English. By the 1800s, the area where Bar Harbor now stands was a thriving settlement. During the late 1800s, the artists began to arrive. It was because of their striking landscapes that people began to take notice of the region’s rustic beauty, and the first summer visitors began arriving. During the 19th century, the Golden Age of Bar Harbor, powerful American families, including the Pulitzers, Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Morgans, Astors, and Fords, built grand summer“cottages” around the island. Then, in October 1947, a massive fire swept the island, with Bar Harbor bearing the brunt of the destruction it left in its wake. In the end, 67 summer estates and five historic hotels were burned to the ground. With the Great Depression and the newly‐introduced income tax having already taken a toll on the opulent lifestyles of the rich, most of these properties were not rebuilt.Pre-apocalypse:
The historic homes and buildings that survived the fire have been finely preserved. Architecture that dates back to the Golden Age can be seen throughout downtown Bar Harbor. The remaining summer estates have been restored and converted to inns or remain private homes.Post-apocalypse:
Due to its geological location and only one bridge connecting it to the mainland, the people of Bar Harbor were able to fend off the undead hordes with relative ease. With the ocean as a natural barrier on one end, the town itself was sealed off by its citizens who constructed an enormous wooden fence, and the only bridge leading to the mainland was blown up making the island only accessible by boat. Under the leadership of Abraham Faraday, the town's sheriff and Mallory's father, the town thrived in the apocalypse until a group of disgruntled citizens under the leadership of Big Dick, a local car salesman and town councilman, did a coup and took over, executing Abraham Faraday on trumped-up 'treason charges'. Knowing it was likely either Mallory or her brother Quinlan, both military, would return one day Big Dick imprisoned Marlene Faraday and keeps Mallory's sister Chloe in his headquarters in the townhall as a pet, as a safety-measure. Under the tyranny of Big Dick the citizens of Bar Harbor live in fear and are afraid to act against Big Dick's men.
The Characters:

Biker and former gang-member. Troy is Mallory's best friend in the apocalypse. She knows that no matter what she does he'll always have her back and she will have his.
Cassandra Lennox (Alivia Hunter)
Character is TAKEN
Nurse and if you ask Mallory, probably one of those girls who got paid a thousand bucks per selfie on Instagram. She joined Mal's group around the same time as Troy. Mal gives Cassie hell all the time in an effort to toughen her up because deep down she cares about Cassie's well-being, even if she acts like she doesn't.
Marlene Faraday (Catherine Keener)
Character is TAKEN
Mallory's mother and ER nurse. Marlene believes Mallory and Quinlan are both still alive and cherishes hope of seeing them again someday, despite being in a hopeless situation ever since her husband was murdered by Big Dick. She is sometimes released from her cell to provide medical care for Big Dick's men. With her daughter Chloe as a hostage, she has no choice but to comply.
Chloe Faraday (Hannah Kasulka)
Character is TAKEN
Mallory's sister. In Mallory's senior year of high school Chloe was in a car accident with her boyfriend. Although Chloe came out unharmed without any brain damage, she acts and talks like a 5 year old as a result of the psychological trauma, having seen her boyfriend beheaded in the accident. She has been in and out of mental institutions since, and was lucky to be home when the dead rose. She does not understand the gravity of the situation she is in, and is used as a plaything for Big Dick's men. She has violent outbursts however from time to time in which she loses all control and is likely to kill someone.
Mikayla Forrester (Britt Robertson)
Character is TAKEN
Mallory's best friend pre-apocalypse. Wherever you saw Mallory you saw Mikayla as well. After Mallory joined the Marine Corps Mikayla got married and stayed in Bar Harbor. The two of them kept in contact over the years, and Mikayla was one of the last people Mallory talked to right before shit hit the fan. Mikayla is the one working on a plan to free Mallory's family but has a hard time finding people to join her cause.
Claudia Rigotti (Marie Avgeropoulos)
Character is TAKEN
Mallory's other best friend pre-apocalypse. Unlike Mikayla however, Claudia and Mallory didn't depart on the best of terms after the both of them committed a stupid act after high school graduation that ended up with Claudia taking the fall for it. Although Claudia was never arrested or prosecuted, Mallory never speaking up about her part in it left a bitter taste in Claudia's mouth. After Big Dick took over the town, Claudia fled to the forests on the island with a bunch of other young people from town, and their aim is to take back the town one day.
Jake Eriksson (Matt Lanter)
Character is OPEN
Mallory's ex-boyfriend. They separated after Mallory left for the Marine Corps, with Jake also going military, joining the US Army Rangers. Jake retired from the military and came home a few weeks prior to the outbreak, hoping to join the sheriff's department but working on a fishing boat in the meantime. He stood by Mallory's father during his leadership but had to flee with Claudia after Big Dick took over the town.
The Bad Guys:
Richard 'Big Dick' Fogarty (Dean Norris)
Character is OPEN
Former town-councilman and car salesman. Big Dick was an egomaniac long before the outbreak, hence his self-given nickname. After he was forced by Abraham Faraday to share his supplies with the rest of the town Big Dick gathered a few like-minded people and staged a coup, executing sheriff Faraday right after. He has since then become the town's leader, and reigns with an iron hand, putting fear in the people's minds as a way to keep them under control. He has taken Chloe and Marlene Faraday as hostages, just in case Mallory or her brother Quinlan should ever return.
Prescott 'Spiff' Fogarty (Patrick Renna)
Character is OPEN
Big Dick's halfwit son. Ill-mannered and sadistic but is an idiot by nature. He loves harrassing the people of Bar Harbor and loves getting away with everything. Whether or not he is an asset or a liability to his father's cause remains to be seen.
Everett Teach (Kevin Durand)
Character is OPEN
A more recent arrival to Bar Harbor, Everett showed up right before the outbreak. Not much is known about his past, but it is likely he was an enforcer for one crime organization or another. He sided with Big Dick during the coup and acts as his bodyguard and enforcer.
Wendell McRafferty (John C. McGinley)
Character is OPEN
One of the town's deputies. He was the first one to turn on sheriff Faraday when Big Dick took over. He was power hungry even before the apocalypse and its only gotten worse now that there is no more limitations in the world. Deep down he's a coward and it's likely he wouldn't die to save Big Dick's life, opting to save his own worthless life instead.
