Applying pressure to the break Haley felt as the SUV slowly came to a stop at the end of the street. Having spent a number of weeks making their way to their final destination Haley and her younger sister had since been joined by a number of other characters, Among them, a fiery redhead named Sophia who had a large X carved in her face, a mother and her young daughter who was around the same age as her youngest sister and finally a dirty blonde named Hannah, she was by far the newest member of the group but over the few days they had spent together she had proven herself to be trustworthy. They had met her in the southern portions of Canada when they had made a detour through it rather than going the long way through the states, She'd warned them about terrible people led by a man named Alec, who had apparently also had a run in with her family, at least it sounded like her family from the way Hannah had described them.
Having made their way back into the states and towards Maine the group had passed through the state border a number of hours ago and had since made their way into the outlying area's of Bar Harbor. The town proper was situated on the island but a number of buildings and smaller towns lay around it's borders. Passing a number of long abandoned buildings the group came to a crossroads. Both led to the town proper according to the signs but which was to choose. Looking to her left Haley's gaze met Hannah's for a moment. "Which way you think?" She asked as her gaze shifted to Ysabel who sat in the back with the kids.
"Well, They both lead to the town eh?" Hannah answered.
"Yea, but which way you think would be the safest?" Haley responded.
"Well, we could always stach the car and go out looking for a bit." Offered Hannah, having spent the bulk of her time after being released from captivity on the road she wasn't a stranger to being in the woods and staying out of sight, a strength she had learned she shared with Sophia, the young fifteen year old she now found in her company. Having posed her idea Hannah looked to the 'adults' of the group for what they wanted to do.
Having stayed quiet for a time as she listened for idea's Haley ran her hand through her hair. "Okay, so we're staching the car and heading out to scout, is that what I'm hearing?" She repeated before looking to Ysabel. "You okay with that? You wanna stay here with the kids or come with?"
Giving her a moment to answer Haley then grabbed her weapon from the floorboard and looked for who was going, to no surprise to her Hannah and Sophia both instantly rose their hands to the air. "Okay, so let's go." With that Haley popped the door open and checked her surroundings, having not seen many of the dead on their way into the town she noted how quiet it was, oddly quiet for how populated the area looked to have been before the end. Taking point Haley led the search party down the right offshoot until they reached the end of a corridor of buildings. Getting against the wall she motioned for the others to follow suit. Satisfied that they all had done what she ordered Haley looked down the length of road, at the end towards the right side she saw what she thought was a figure. Watching as it shambled out onto the road Haley held her hand up to signal the rest to hold their position .
Waiting in silence for the creature to pass Haley was caught off guard when she saw a rod fly from somewhere behind them and into the head of the creature. Following the flight path of the bolt Haley soon found where it had come from, an African American in dark clothing, around her neck rested a green scarf and in her hands a compound bow. "Shit." Haley muttered as she saw her take notice that they were there. Surprisingly though she didn't do what Haley had assumed she would. On the contrary she waved them over.
"You know it's clear up here right? That's probably the only walker you'll see in these parts for miles. They all headed up towards the island the other night when the explosions and gunfire were kicking off." The girl said as she approached. Watching as she stopped a distance away Haley straightened out but kept her hand raised telling the others to stay in place.
"Who are you?" Haley asked.
"Names Latara, What's yours ma'am?" The girl answered.
"Latara huh? You from Bar Harbor?"
"From the island? Nah, I'm from the southern parts. Hunting for food and the like." Latara answered.
Eyeing the girl over Haley wondered who she was hunting for, having provided a vague answer as to where she came from Haley kept her eyes on the girl and her hand on her weapon. "So what are you doing this far north if you're from the southern edge of the state?"
"Huh? Simple lady, I'm one of their scouts and hunters, I go back to deliver food and that's about it." Latara answered as she crossed her arms. "You guys looking for that town right? The big one on the island?"
Weary of the girl before her Haley nodded. "Yea, We heard that it's safe there."
"Safe?" Latara repeated. "I don't know about safe, few nights ago there was a load of explosions and gunfire comin from that direction, it led a bunch of the walkers to the shores."
"Explosions? Gunfire?" Hannah then questioned as she pushed herself off the wall and came to join Haley in the road, catching the look she had received from Haley as she approached Hannah just smiled before looking to Latara. "A fight or something?"b
"I don't know, couldn't get that far in." Latara answered as she swung her bow around her shoulder. Bringing her bag to the ground she crouched down and unzipped the main pocket before brandishing a map of the area. "If you folks wanna get over there and check it out though you'll need to go grab a boat, They blew the bridge connecting the main road in. I found a boat in one of the small boathouses to the north though." Latara explained as she unfolded the map. "Follow this road in and turn right, just follow the road until you see a boathouse on the right hand side. Can't miss it."
Listinging to Latara explain about how the bridge was out and how she had found a boat Haley scrunched her face up, 'why was she being so helpful?' She wondered to herself, having not run into many helpful and genuinely nice members of society after the end Haley found it hard to trust the girl in front of her. "Why tell us? You just met us." She asked.
"Why? Well, I ain't got a use for it at the moment and we don't got anything set up here." Latara answered.
Noticing that she said 'we' rather than 'I' Haley's suspicion grew until she saw Latara hand her the map, on it was marked the paths she had taken since finding it. "So what you wanna do is follow this path, there's a load of the dead on the road here thanks to whatever happened on the island the other day." Her hand following the path she had drawn with a sharpy at some point during her time with it Haley followed it and listened as she spoke. Watching her finger hover over a large red circle drawn over a piece of the road just off the shore she heard as Latara explained that a good amount of the dead were there.
Before they could ask any more questions the girl was gone, having left them with the map she ducked through an alley, "Hey! Wait!" Haley called, but it was no use.
Looking to the map Haley followed the markings around it, whoever this Latara was she had defiantly been around for a while, there were paths carved every which way. investigating it further she saw a small mark. "If ever in need, 375" 'if ever in need, 375?' Haley repeated in her mind. as in a Radio frequency? Maybe? Brushing the thought away for the time Haley returned to the rest. "I don't know how much I trust this." She said as she held the map out for them to see.
"Well, let's just follow it and keep an eye out, if it's a trap we just bug out before we trigger it yea?" Hannah answered. "I mean, I set a few of them in my time. They always got a tail. What you think?"
