Mal went outside with Cutler and was pleased to see it working again. Hearing Cutler's affirmation Mal nodded and decided the man was the only one with the right posture to use it.
"Well, it's yours now." Mal said. "You're the only one big enough to use it! I've got all I need from it to create smaller ones in time. Why don't you store it in one of the trucks before we head out? Oh and by the way... thought you mind want to know Claudia is coming too, and she's taking her new bike. You should ride with her!"
Mal then gave the gentle giant a wink and went back inside. Troy said he wanted to get changed and pick him up at his newly acquired house. "Cool, remember to dress warm and bring extra clothing! We'll be gone for quite some time!" Mal said.
There was another thing though Mal had to do before she left herself. Ellie's Wisconsin expedition, Mal didn't want it to go unrecorded. She walked over to the young crowd and inspected the work on Ziggy's tank/jeep. Seemed they got a functioning GPS tracking signal installed as well. Mal was impressed.
"Hey guys, nice work on the car!" Mal said. "Wish we had it for our own expedition. I'm heading out myself to the hydroelectric dam so I'll be gone for a while. It's serious business so..."
Mal said it casually but it was kind of serious really. If they got it working it would mean power for them and the entire region. Mal played it down but in reality she was worried about the outcome. Someone turned down the electricity at some point, and whoever did might still be there. Or it happened by accident because the dead had overrun the place and stuff needed to get repaired.
"Anyway, I won't be here when you guys leave so I'll say it now." Mal continued. "I'd like for you guys to keep a daily log describing the daily events, interesting places you might see, maybe even people you might need. Maybe mark down things you find so we can recover them later. Anyway, there's paperblanks in stock, tell the quartermaster I said to give you one. If he gives you trouble or doesn't believe you, get Mikayla. She'll be holding down the fort while Claw and I are gone."
Mal then gave the girls a hug and Brody a pat on the shoulder. They weren't in her militia so she didn't need to be formal with them.
"Anyway, good luck guys and be careful!" Mal said. "Don't take any unnecessary risks and if it's too dangerous you head straight back you hear? I expect to see all of you back before the spring! I expect a full report on your journey when you get back!"
In reality the Wisconsin expedition was a scouting mission, and Mal really wanted to know what they would see during their trip and if there were other settlements they could make contact with. Finally, she waved goodbye and got in the refurbished old army jeep that served as her 'commander's vehicle'. Mal figured if it survived World War Two, it could survive this too. Thank god Bar Harbor once had those World War Two reenactors and their vehicles! Although at some point they'd have to modernize their fleet.
Mal drove over to Troy's house and honked the old timey horn on the car before getting out and going to the door, knocking on it. She had already said goodbye to everyone else before heading to the garage.
"Troy! Time to go!" Mal said. "Let's go, the others are already waiting by the gate!"
Mal then leaned against the door and waited for Troy to come out. She wondered whether or not he was going to ride with her or if he would take his bike.
