Ziggy's anger slowly subsided as she heard Ayita's and Sara's soothing words. She closed her eyes and breathed in and out deeply a few times but some of the rage inside her remained. Not only did Maxine died thinking Ziggy was dead and that she was responsible for it, she was also surrounded by cowards who had given up on surviving from the very beginning it seemed. That was no easy feat to get over.
"She died thinking she was responsible for my death." Ziggy said a bit more calmly. "She was also surrounded by people who had no idea what they were doing and had given up from the very beginning. I should've come back and check the campus rather than to believe it got overrun."
It took Ziggy a few more minutes but finally she got up a bit calmer, kissed Ayita on the head to thank her for holding her, and started to check the room. Her skateboard, what Maxine had fought for to keep it from becoming firewood, was still there. Oh how she had missed the damn thing! Ziggy swore by the brand ZERO, which although it was commonly known to be a bit heavier, was more sturdier and better for street skating which she preferred over vert skating. Various stickers covered the skateboard, as did messages written on it which had become vague from all the grinding. Still, one could make out the names Vivien, Gitte and Adele. Ziggy attached the skateboard to her backpack vertically, as not to get stuck in any doors but didn't put it on just yet. There was more stuff she needed to put inside.
On a cork board hanging above her bed were a whole bunch of pictures, from her friends in Germany to her family, and of her former lover Dieter. For reasons Ziggy had explained before, there wasn't a picture of her mother to be found. There was a picture of her father though, which explained where Ziggy got the guitar-playing talent from.
"My Dad." Ziggy said as she showed the picture. "Bet you guys were expecting someone with lederhosen and a pint of beer and a sausage in his hands huh?"
Ziggy chuckled. German stereotypes were fine with her as long as they didn't involve the nazis. She took all the photos from the corkboard and put them in her backpack as well. She went over to the drawer and opened it to check it. Weirdly enough, the folder with all her official documents was still inside, including her passport. Ziggy flipped through it and apart from a few spare passport pictures, found her student visa, her German ID card and her driver's license, as well as her University of Vermont Student ID.
"Whoops! My visa expired!" Ziggy said. "Guess I'm in this country illegally now!"
Chuckling again, Ziggy put the passport, the two ID cards and her driver's license in the inner pocket of her jacket. Although they didn't mean anything anymore, it felt kind of nice having them again. She then walked over to what was once her closet and opened it, but her jaw dropped when she saw it was empty.
"What the fuck!? They stole my clothes!" Ziggy said. "Unbelievable!"
Not even a pair of panties or a bra was left. Ziggy grunted as she closed the closet, shaking her head. She wouldn't have mind Maxine having them but the closet opposite hers on Maxine's side of the room revealed they had stolen all her clothes as well. And for what exactly? To commit suicide in? In any case, Ziggy had what she came for; her personal stuff. She did go over to Maxine's side of the room, who had polaroids hanging on the side of her bide. Ziggy took the ones that had Maxine in them and even found a couple of them together, putting them in her backpack once she had taken them. Ziggy then put her backpack on and took the Bulbasaur figurine that Sara had taken and put back before. Maxine was a geek and a collector, and she had dragged Ziggy to multiple Cons before the end. Ziggy knew Maxine would hate for her 'mint condition treasures', as she called them herself, to go to waste.
"Here Sara!" Ziggy said as she threw the Bulbasaur figure to her friend. "Maxine would've hated it if her treasures would go to waste. And what better curator for these artifacts than you right? Go nuts!"
Although Maxine often spoke of 'limited editions' or 'custom crafted' items, Ziggy honestly didn't know the true value of these items. Still, maybe at some point in the future, like fifty years from now on, special items from before the end might be worth something. Maybe the world would be rebuilt by then and they could cash in on items that were made before the walker apocalypse. In any case, they were worth something to Sara, and that's what mattered. Ziggy put her arm around Ayita and waited for Sara to go to town on Maxine's geek stuff.
