Clara sat against the back wall of the small back office of the weapon store, a knot had long since formed in her throat as she listened to the soft sobs of her sister Emmi pierce the silence, slightly muffled from burring her face in Clara's shirt. Running her hand along her sisters back as she watched the door leading back into the main sales area she wiped the beginning of tears from her cheek with her free hand. Keep it together Clara, happy, happy for her. She thought as she listened to the sobs continue from below her, she wanted to tell her that everything would be okay, that mom and Anna weren't actually dead in the other room but that they were in fact on a run and would be back later that evening, but that would have been a true and utter lie on her part, which she wouldn't do. Even to keep herself sane. "We... We need.." Clara began before feeling the knot in her throat cut any form of speech from making it past her lips, Instead a sharp breath and long sigh came out, Followed by a stifled sob on her part. Bring her arms to fully wrap around her younger sister Clara pulled her sister up to her level, "He.. Hey bud, We need... Need to keep our heads up, For them. you know?" she said, only half believing it herself as she looked passed her younger sister for a moment through the door at the shoes and feet sticking out from behind the adjacent wall.
Emmi stared at her younger sister for a moment as she tried her best to hold back the full force of her sorrow, knowing from experiance that loud noises brought more of those things to come investigate looking for a free meal. "What.... What are we gonna do now?" she said, defeated as she leaned into her older sister who had leaned back against the wall, her rifle leaning on the wall close by. "I don't know bud... We ain't given up though, Not for nothin!" she announced through a hard breath and a second stifled sob as she looked away from the door. Listening to the soft sound of the spring shower outside Clara felt her sister lean into her once again and once more, Clara held off for a little longer but she could only hold it in for so long. Tears began to stream freely after a few more seconds, The soft pitter patter of rain mixed with the sobs in Clara's ears as she sat there, Nothing really caught her ear as she sat there, maybe it was the sobs fogging her senses or the dulling of them from her emotions but she missed the soft sounds of footsteps making their way through the broken glass window of the buildings facade. It wasn't until the shadow of a figure cast against the wall outside the door to the office did Clara notice. Instantly reaching for her rifle she aimed it at the door. "Who... Who's there!" she shouted out as she fought her way to her feet, keeping herself between the door and her sister Clara waited for the figure to make their way into view, her sights shaking slightly as she tried to keep the water works under control until the true nature of the figure was revealed.
Why now? Clara thought as she waited for the figure to make it's way into view, Was it a person? A biter? If it wasn't a biter are they friend or foe? These questions ran on repeat in the young girls mind as they swirled with the thoughts of what she was going to do to keep her and her sister alive without the support of their mother, and without their sister. Why'd I not check the corner... All I had to do was check the freaking corner... she ran through her mind, blaming herself for the loss of two of her most cherished members of society. "Who... Who's there!" she called again as the figure bobbed ever closer to the doorway leading into that solitary back office in that solitary town in the woods of Pennsylvania. Rain beating on the roof, wind blowing through the leaves and the stifled sobs from her sister mixed with the beating of her heart as Clara stood at the ready for whatever was on the other side of the wall, She wasn't letting another member of her family suffer the same fate as the rest, Even if it meant her own safety. "Come on man!" she shouted to the shadow as it grew closer, ever closer.
