Mikayla followed closely, not letting go of Chloe the entire time. When they reached the school, Mikayla remembered the night she sent the final message to Claudia. The one where Gerry followed her and pulled the trigger on her. If it hadn't been for the gun malfunctioning she wouldn't be here now, standing right where Gerry fell. Her own brother, her own flesh and blood brainwashed into thinking she was endangering the common good of Bar Harbor. He was still alive for the moment, in that same fallout shelter Marlene was in. But what to do if he ever woke up? Mikayla already knew her family would be torn apart if Gerry ever woke up. She would never forgive him in this lifetime.
When they finally got inside, they went into a classroom near the stairs to the roof, but with an overlook on the streets so they could keep an eye out for when Mallory and Claudia arrived. All they could do now was wait, and hope Mallory was as succesful as she, Joe and Fearah had been with Chloe. Mikayla sat down with Chloe and put her arm around her shoulder, holding her close.
"Guess what Chloe?" Mikayla said. "Mally is back from school and she's gonna get Mommy and meet us here! Amazing huh!"
Chloe's eyes lit up even though it was half-dark in the classroom which made Mikayla smile as wide as Chloe did. "Chloe see Mommy and Mally? Mikki promise?"
"Mikki promise!" Mikayla answered. She had faith Mallory would succeed.
"Daddy and Ryan come too?" Chloe then asked. Mikayla felt the lump in her throat again but kept her tears at bay. How were they going to tell Chloe her father was dead? And Ryan, Mikayla's husband... she hadn't even come to terms with his death yet so how would Chloe cope hearing two of her favorite people were dead?
"Maybe sweetie... maybe." Mikayla finally answered. "We'll see okay?"
Chloe rested her head on Mikayla's chest and Mikayla gave her kiss. In her mind she was already thinking on how to deal with Chloe when the fighting would start. It then occured to Mikayla she had forgotten one of the most important things: in her excitement she had forgotten to tell Claudia her parents were still alive! Mikayla banged her head against the wall softly. How could she have forgotten that!? She felt like a lousy friend but pondered whether or not Claudia would be better off not knowing yet for the time being. She seemed focused but maybe it could've been the thing to get her out of her concentration...
Mikayla just sighed. There was nothing she could do about it now. All they could do now was wait for Mallory to join them and kick-off the liberation of Bar Harbor. One thing Mikayla knew though; she was going to fight and personally see to it everyone that had done wrong would be punished. Even if it killed her.
For Ryan.
