The sun was setting over Mount Desert Island. Despite being it December the weather was good and the temperature wasn't too cold, quite warm for this time of year. One could've gone about the day without having to wear a jacket. Preparations were complete and the army was ready. In the command tent Mallory stood before all the team leaders to brief them one last time. They had all heard the plan and their tasks probably up to point where it would annoy them immensely, but nothing could go wrong. It was win or die, there was no going back. Not a day longer would they live in the forest. By night's end, they'd all be inhabitants of Bar Harbor again and the next night they'd all sleep in their own beds again. There would be no failure, no retreat. By morning the town was going to be free, or they were all going to be dead. That was the way it had to be.
"Alright, one last time!" Mal spoke. "Troy, Claudia and I are going in by water first and make contact with our agents inside. Once we have, we'll move in on freeing both my mother and sister. Once they're free, we're gonna hold up at the high school giving us a clear view of the gate and walls, providing cover for the main assault. Once we're in position, we'll fire off a flare and the main assault can begin. If the flare is not fired before midnight, it means we've been compromised. In that case the assault will start at 0:00am sharp. If that is the case, do not worry yourself with our wellbeing, we'll most likely be dead anyway. The most important thing is the town gets liberated, and this is your main priority."
It sounded a bit fatalistic but Mal knew freeing her family was a secondary objective, not the main one. She couldn't allow her own personal mission to jeopardize the future of all the others. If she had to sacrifice herself and her family she would. Unfortunately it also meant possibly sacrificing Troy, Claudia, Mikayla, Josephine and Sarah which didn't seem really fair but being a leader was knowing when to serve the greater good. It was burden she would bear gladly if it meant others could live free and in peace.
"If things go as they should, and we fire the flare the explosives kart will be rolled downhill and toward the gate." Mal continued. "Once it explodes and it blasts open the gate, Jake and Mark's team will fire the smoke grenades. Once the smoke has deployed, Frank and the bikers will ride in through the gate and wreck havoc on the other side creating confusion. Once they're inside, Jake and Mark will lead the first wave to the gate and secure it.Cam's team will provide sniper fire and my team will do what we can from the roof of the high school."
Jake stepped forward. There were a few things he needed to say in case the cart wouldn't explode or the explosion wouldn't destroy the gate.
"Alright, back-up plan in case the cart doesn't explode or the gate doesn't get damaged enough." Jake spoke. "First wave will secure the front of the gate, and try to set off the cart manually. In the unlikely case that doesn't work, or the gate isn't damaged enough to create an opening for our forces to get through my team will be carrying chains so we can tear down the walls using the motorcycles to pull. This will take more time and we'll be open to fire from the walls meaning your team will have to step it up a notch Carmin! Also, at this point second wave will have to create a firing line and do what they can from their position. But let's hope everything goes to plan and this won't be necessary."
Mal knew complications meant more chance of losing lives. But she trusted Mark to keep the explosives cart in working condition and had checked it herself at least three times a day to make sure nothing was leaking. Normally it would go boom without a hitch.
"Once the first wave has secured the gate, second wave will follow in." Mal spoke again. "Once they reach it half of them goes left, the other half right. Teamleaders, keep your teams together and fight anyone who opposes you in the streets. Once the streets are clear circle around and start clearing houses, and aid the medical group where necessary. Also, keep in mind Cam's sniper group will advance with the second wave so cover will be tremendously less for a while while you get to the gate. Stay low, move from cover to cover if you can and spread out as much as you can. A group of people is a target, a single person a waste of ammo."
Then there was the last part, the medical group. Cassie's unit.
"Cassie, once first and second wave are in your group will move advance to the gate and set up a forward medical post." Mal said. "Do what you can for the wounded but don't waste time on lost causes. I know it's harsh but there might be situations when all you can do is to put them out of their pain. I know you'll be able to make this decision if it comes to it. If I can I'll send my mother to help you. Also, make sure the dead that stayed behind don't come back. I'm expecting the same from all of you if it comes to it! Don't let those you kill come back, and the same goes for people on our side."
Post-battle plan and rules of engagement.
"Alright, rules of engagement." Mal continued. "We're going up against people we called neighbor or even friend at some point. Some chose to side with Big Dick, others didn't. Rules of engagement are simple: if they aim at you, kill them. If they surrender, spare and secure them. If they surrender but you know FOR CERTAIN that they killed one of us, execute them. But I expect that if you execute someone you can at least prove somehow they killed one of us during the battle. If I find out somehow you've used this rule to settle old scores, you'll regret it."
"Same goes for me!" Claudia said. "Be certain and be able to prove those you executed killed someone, or I'll do worse than kill you."
Claudia nodded at Mallory. Seemed the only thing left was the question of Big Dick.
"If you see Big Dick and his lieutenants, try to capture them alive." Mallory said. "But it is a certainty they killed people before so I won't hold it against you if you bring them in dead."
That was all. Time to finish the meeting.
"Alright, get to your teams and wait for Jake and Mark to lead you to the forest near the town." Mal said. "Good luck to you all, and Godspeed. Dismissed!"
After everyone left the command tent, Mal turned to Claudia and Troy who would go with her on the stealth mission.
"You guys good to go?" Mal asked. "Let's not waste anymore time!"
"I'm good!" Claudia answered. "Let's do this!"
Claudia nodded and went and got geared up. Mal waited to see if there was anything else Troy wanted to see before they got going.
