Mallory chuckled as Troy came to sit with her on the cart, lighting a cigarette but then breaking it in two, saying he was going to quit. If there was a time to smoke anything, now would be the time. Although she was normally not a smoker herself, she could somehow feel the need.
"Hell Troy, after all this I've got half a mind to pick it up." Mal laughed. "Might even give one of your joints a try. But yeah, you can get Marco. Just take a few of our guys with you, people might not be happy to see him."
Seeing the people gather to get their pound of flesh from Big Dick, Mal knew now came a difficult part where they had to keep the order while bringing Big Dick to justice. Everyone wanted Big Dick's head. An angry mob complete with torches lighting up the streets had gathered in front of the high school. Mal thought about what her father would do in a time like this but couldn't yet decide on how to handle the matter. Claudia had made her way forward and came to stand with her and Troy. So did Mikayla.
"Shit, I thought this only happened in movies and TV-shows?" Claudia said. "Anyway, you need to make a statement here Mal. I say execute him in front of everyone, then say what you're gonna say."
"Your dad would want it to make it quick and painless Mal." Mikayla added. "But you might want to do otherwise. These people have suffered, and they're gonna want satisfaction. Give'em a show."
Mikayla handed Mallory a baseball bat. Beat Big Dick to death or put a bullet in him. She was still conflicted as to what her old man would do. Knowing her dad he'd lock Big Dick up and let him have a fair trial, but Mal had made that mistake with Everett before and it got Ayita hurt. Whatever she'd do it would decide what kind of leader she'd be in future.
"Whatever you decide, we'll be right behind you Mal." Claudia said.
"Always." Mikayla added.
Mal looked at the bat, then jumped down the cart. A circle was formed with Big Dick in the middle. Mal walked over to him and was still undecided. Big Dick kept her eyes on her, his face in real terror. The crowd became silent, with the only thing hearable the wind going through the flames of the torches and the tips crisping.
"What are you gonna do to me!?" Big Dick said. "Why do you have that bat!? Look, you don't need to do this! We can talk about what happened with your dad okay!? It wasn't just my decision!"
"Bullshit!" Someone in the crowd yelled. "Abe was killed on his order! He made us watch while his people had guns on us!"
A few more shouts and yells came from the crowd in confirmation. Mal took the baseball bat and lifted up Big Dick's chin with it, looking him square in the eye saying nothing.
"Look Mallory, I had to do what I had to do you know!" Big Dick pleaded. "Some of these guys would've hurt a lot more people if I hadn't done what I did with your old man okay!? I had to make a choice between him and a lot of innocent people! Everett was one of them, that guy was always out for blood! I did it to keep them in line!"
There was no doubt in Mal's mind Everett was bloodthirsty, although the next thing Mikayla would say said otherwise.
"Again, more bullshit!" Mikayla said. "Everett may have gone mad in the end but before he never killed anyone unless it was by Big Dick's order. He wouldn't even touch you, not like the others. He's lying Mal. Big time."
"Mikayla! How could you do this to me!" Big Dick said. "I thought you had finally chosen me! We made love, what if you're carrying my baby!? Don't let them to this to me!"
Mikayla chuckled and shook her head. Pathetic piece of shit. As if she'd ever let herself get knocked up by him. It came as a surprise to Mal and Claudia but they didn't blame Mikayla. As far as spying went, she had sacrificed a lot.
"Yeah about that..." Mikayla said. "Two things your idiot son provided me with; alcohol which I used to make molotovs and birth controls pills, which were plenty in supply since you confiscated them all. So yeah, I'm good in the no baby department."
Believing people should 'breed', Big Dick had confiscated any form of profylactic in town. Fortunately for her, Spiff didn't fancy becoming a dad so he provided Mikayla with the necessary birth control pills to keep their little agreement going.
"Spiff! God! No!" Big Dick said in disbelief. "Fuck! Fuck!"
Mal believed Mikayla did what she had to do as their spy, but didn't believe she would be able to do it herself. Her friend had sacrificed so much... In the meantime Mal hadn't said anything yet which made Big Dick uncomfortable.
"What are you gonna do to me!?" Big Dick said. "Say something damn you!"
Looking at him a while longer, Mal then finally lowered the bat and handed it back to Mikayla, who seemed somewhat disappointed. Mal then took her M9 out of its holster and aimed at Big Dick.
"Oh shit oh fuck!" Big Dick said. "Wait! Fucking wait!"
Mal looked at him over the sights, keeping the handgun trained on his face. She debated whether or to kill him fast but then come to realize... yeah he wronged her family but was she the one who should take revenge for everyone else Big Dick had wronged?"
"You know, my dad was a righteous man..." Mal started. "Had you not killed him he'd be right here telling me not to pull the trigger."
Mal stopped aiming at Big Dick, who was momentarily relieved, but stayed nervous because Mal started walking back and forth in front of him.
"Dad always used to say the law was his to uphold." Mal continued. "But that the real justice belonged to the people. I want to kill you myself for what you did to him Dick, I really do. You don't know how much restraint it takes to blow you away right now. But Dad wouldn't want it. And even though he's not with us anymore, I still wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing full well I did something he wouldn't approve."
"Yes, that's right!" Big Dick said. "He wouldn't want you to! He was a better man than me! I should've never done what I did to him, I see that now! And you're his daughter! Do what he would've done!"
Mal holstered her handgun again. Claudia and Mikayla looked at eachother in surprise. Was Mal really going to let him live? In front of all these people.
"I'm gonna do exactly what my Dad would've wanted me to do." Mal said. "Give the real justice to the people, who it belongs to."
"Wha-what do you mean?" Big Dick asked. "What do you mean by that!?"
"End of the road Dick."
Mal turned her back on him and gave Mikayla a nod, then walked further. The justice belonged to the people, and she was going to give the people what they were righteously owed. Mikayla brandished the bat and grinned, walking to Big Dick, and the crowd did the same. Mal walked up to the stairs of the high school and leaned against the wall.
Big Dick first cries of disbelief followed by him shouting for people to leave him alone soon became screams of pain which went on for at least two minutes. Then, it became the screams of a man on the verge of death, followed by gurgling sounds which went silent. Then the crowd cheered as Big Dick's head on a stick was towering above them.
The people had their justice; Big Dick was dead. But this would be the last time ever they would do things this way. Mal fired her handgun in the air a couple of times, then the people urged eachother to be quiet so Mal could speak.
"Tonight was the very last time we did things this way!" Mal spoke. "From here on out things change!"
Mal took a few steps forwards and a circle was formed around her. People looked at her, waiting for what she had to say.
"All of us have been wronged." Mal continued. "All of us have lost friends and family. But tonight, people have fought and died so we can change things for the better! People who believe that from this very night on, we can start rebuilding society! People who believe that the world in its current state is not permanent, and that we can bring back civilization inch by inch starting with the very soil of our island, which is now christened with our own blood!"
Mal started walking around to see if she saw anyone she fought with tonight. Soon, a few familiar faces appeared.
"People like Gill Westham, who tonight slayed a giant!" Mal said. "Saving us all!"
"Aww shucks boss!" Gill said as he smiled. "Weren't nothing!"
Mal walked over to the next two familiar faces she saw.
"People like Thomas Winfield and Brody Mitchell!" Mal continued as she walked to the two boys. "Whose team rained fire from the rooftops, saving all our asses on multiple occasions taking out heavy machine guns!"
Thomas and Brody smiled while they were being tapped on the shoulder or being hugged by their families. Mal then walked over to Troy.
"People like my friend Troy Morrow!" Mal said. "Who had no personal gain in fighting here in tonight, but did so out of friendship for others!"
"And not to forget the brave people in the cafeteria!" Mal said. "Who believed so much in our cause and got wounded during the pursuit!"
Mal became quiet and so did the crowd.
"And the ones who tonight laid down their lives for us all to have a better tomorrow." Mal said. She then walked up the stairs and towered out above the crowd.
"They will be remembered for now and all eternity." Mal continued. "They will be spoken of when people talk about how civilization restarted. Their bravery and sacrifice will be passed on generation after generation, never to be forgotten. And like everyone else here tonight who fought, they will become part of history. One day, maybe in a hundred years or more, someone will walk down the street in a crowd and say; I'm here today because the people of Bar Harbor restarted society. One day, someone will be on the roof of a building in a city and say; I'm here because the people of Bar Harbor restarted civilization. One day, someone in Cape Canaveral will launch another space shuttle and say; I'm here because the people in Bar Harbor restored technology. One day; all Americans will live in a unified nation once more and say; we are here because the people in Bar Harbor restarted our once proud country! History is ours to write my friends! And we will be remembered for it. FOR OUR FAMILIES! FOR BAR HARBOR! FOR AMERICA! WE ARE... MARINERS!"
The people started cheering and Mal along with Troy and the others she had pointed out in her speech were lifted from the ground and put on people's shoulders. She would indulge in the celebrations for a little while, but then the real work would begin. Bar Harbor was going to be the birthplace of a new civilization, and there was no time like the present to get it started.
